Nobody in my family even tried to teach me about our history. High school was when I started really looking into the history of our background or culture, myself. I’m a black girl living in America, and since I was little, I was practically shunned from learning about mine and other cultures. Any question I had wasn’t answered coherently, if at all, or “inappropriately” due to their own detestation against the other ethnicities. This was probably because of how complex our history is. My history consists of over 100 years of violence and discrimination against people who looked like me. Even though a lot of time has passed since then, many people, including the ones who don’t look like me, still face those problems of violence and discrimination today. Many people believe that if we confront the hard history of the past that we can continue forward with the knowledge that could keep future peace.
